We are conducting pilot studies of iSTART-Early, and are recruiting 3rd -5th grade students to participate! Students will be able to learn evidence-based reading strategies, try out educational games, and win fun prizes!

Around the 3rd grade, students must begin switching from learning to read to reading to learn. Recent work has emphasized that successfully navigating this switch is predominantly a function of instructional practice rather than students’ inability to engage in reading comprehension strategies. Thus, although many students initially lack the skills to understand text with deep comprehension, these skills can be successfully taught and learned with deliberate practice.
iSTART-Early is an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) that teaches higher-order comprehension strategies to 3rd and 4th graders in a game-based environment. iSTART-Early is adaptive and provides strategy instruction and personalized practice on comprehending grade-appropriate informational texts.
